Woman breaches Halifax airfield security
By The Canadian Press
HALIFAX - Air traffic at Halifax's airport was briefly interrupted Sunday morning when a woman scaled the barbed-wire perimeter fence and ran onto the tarmac.
RCMP say the 37-year-old woman from the Windsor Junction-Fall River area was trying to stop an aircraft from taking off because she believed her partner was onboard.
Airport spokesman Peter Spurway says control tower officials spotted the woman almost immediately after she made it onto the airfield, around 8:30 a.m.
Besides a three-metre, barbed-wire fence, the airport's perimeter is protected by video cameras, infrared sensors and motion detectors.
Spurway says this type of incident is rare and that airport officials will assess whether any changes to the facility's security system are necessary.
Police say charges against the woman are unlikely.
